Key Note Address Helping Children Grow

Understanding Anxiety in young children from an Attachment Theory and Practice view point

Children have many needs that fill their days from the moment they wake up until the time they eventually fall asleep each night. As they go through these daily tasks, they are also fulfilling their greatest requirement ��" connection to us as their caregivers. These relationships are the bases of how children venture out in their world and become their own individuals. These relationships also provide, during times of stress, the answers for finding a way through struggle.

Join us for this presentation on common childhood challenges such as anxiety and how our relationships with children can lead us through.

Key Note Speaker Kerry Crump

Kerry Crump, Masters in Clinical Social Work and a Child and Youth Mental Health Clinician. Kerry is the mother of two young children. She has been working with Child and Youth Mental Health for thirteen years. Kerry is a Newfield Institute Fellow and has given workshops such as:

Workshops

1. Trauma-Informed Practice: How Understanding the Effects of Trauma on Brain Development Can Transform How We Support Children and Families

This workshop will cover the underpinning core concepts of brain development in the context of adversity/ trauma, and how these concepts can be used on the ground in childcare settings and with vulnerable families

The workshop will introduce the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT), which combines child development, neuroscience and psychiatry. NMT lays a groundwork of understanding for people about the neurology of a person, the biology of a person, a physiological response to things and how that translates into emotion, and behaviour and day-to-day functioning. This approach is based on the work of Dr. Bruce Perry.

Facilitator: Andrew McKenzie comes to his clinical work with insight and knowledge gained through his experiences as and adoptive parent of children with developmental trauma, as well as over a decade of working with at-risk children in the B.C. public school system. Andrew’s experiential and academic understandings of how strong, attuned relationships are the most potent ingredients of healing, underpin his role as a Childhood Trauma Consultant for Vancouver Island-based Pathways to Healing Partnership. Through this position, Andrew, a Master’s Level Counsellor and Neurosequential Model Clinician, works to support vulnerable families and train systems, such as foster parents and schools, in understanding the developmental impacts of trauma, and effective therapeutic avenues.

Enriching Early Child Care and Education Programs using the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society Cultural Kits:


BCACCS has developed a series of new Cultural Kits for their Resource Centre. These kits include books, puppets, and dramatic play materials informed by local BC Indigenous cultures and communities.The two focus kits will be on loan to The Berry Patch and available for borrowing following the conference to registered child care providers and members of The Berry Patch CCRR. In this workshop participants will: discuss important considerations about protocols in sharing cultural knowledge with children think about how to build relationships with Cultural teachers in your community, and have a chance to play with and plan experiences for children focusing on the materials in two of the BCACCS Cultural Kits

Facilitator Kirsten Bevelander is a Provincial Child Care Advisor for the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (BCACCS). The BCACCS Child Care Advisors are a part of the CCRR program and visit child care providers and Aboriginal centers around the province providing support through training, advocacy and sharing of resources. Kirsten has worked with children and families for over 25 years, specializing in toddler care, children with additional needs, literacy learning and Aboriginal early child development and care. She is also an instructor for the Burnaby ECE Continuing Education Program.

3. Aspects of FASD



FASD is a complex brain based injury that has far reaching and lifelong effects on the child, family and community. During this workshop we will briefly review the effect of prenatal alcohol exposer of the developing fetus and discuss the strategies that can be used to work with individuals with FASD in a childcare setting, including communication, transitions and impulsivity. Facilitator: Sarah Browne was born and raised in Prince Rupert BC, and moved to Calgary Alberta to complete her Early Childhood Care and Education Basic and Post Basic. Before returning to Prince Rupert Sarah worked with teen parents and their infants in Calgary. Currently Sarah works as an Infant Development Consultant and a Supported Child Development Consultant for Northwest Community Services in Prince Rupert. Sarah is a trained Circle of Security facilitator and was recently trained in the Partnership Projects FASD facilitator training and the Partnership Projects Challenging Behaviours facilitator training. Sarah has a passion for working with children and families and supporting them in all areas of growth and development.



4. Drum Making: A hands on Experience This workshop includes drum kits valued at $84, sponsored by Northern Savings Credit Union and instruction on how to make the drums. In most instances a drum can be completed during the two hour time period . Facilitator: Cindy Spencer is an Early Childhood Educator and works as the Supervisor at the Aboriginal Head Start in Prince Rupert.





5. How nature Curriculum can be integrated into Centre Programming This workshop will address the benefits of nature curriculum for child development and provide practical examples of how to integrate outdoor experiences into your classroom or center. The activities will be hands on and




creative with an emphasis on place‐based learning and how to start small.





Facilitator: Lisa Scherr has a B Ed in Elementary Education (Primary Curriculum and Classroom Music concentrations)


from the University of Victoria. She was a past ECE instructor with Native Education College of Vancouver


Prince Rupert Campus. Lisa has been a supported child development consultant with Prince Rupert Community


Enrichment Society and currently teaches kindergarten at Conrad School in Prince Rupert.


Mercedes Palozzi has a Bachelors Degree in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education from The University of




Guelph‐Humber. She also has a Bachelor of Education from York University. She has worked in a variety of child





care settings and taught primary grades in England. She is currently teaching at Conrad School in Prince Rupert.




6. Sensory stimulation Activities for Early Childhood Centers




This interactive workshop will cover the definitions of the 5 + 3 Senses, Processing it all, impact on learning and


ability to regulate, how do we process personally and what can we do to help? The workshop will include making


a fidget.


Facilitator: Sue Neilson: Sue has lived and worked in Prince Rupert since 1983,. She has worked with adults and


since 2006 until 2017 with children in the Prince Rupert school district. She graduated from the Glasgow School


of Occupational Therapy in 1977



7. Baby Sign




Baby sign language, is a simple, yet specialized form of sign language, based on American Sign Language. It is



used to communicate with pre‐ and non‐verbal infants, toddlers and children with language delays and concerns.




During this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of the many benefits to teaching and using baby


sign in their child care centers and home. Benefits such a reduction in frustration for young children, a boost in


communication skills, and building or enhancing the bridge to the spoken word. Participants will have the opportunity


to learn some simple, yet very important signs, such as milk, more and water. Participants will be introduced


to the MySmartHands Program, an international baby sign program based on American Sign Language.


This program was designed for parents of infants and toddlers to use to communicate with their children, long


before they speak their first word.



Facilitator: Kim Williams is an Early Childhood Educator, holds an Adult Education certificate and


has a certificate Level one in American Sign Language. Kim has been running her own day care for


15 years.



8. The Gift of Cedar Bracelet Weaving


The weaving workshop is a hands on activity. It will cover background information about harvesting weaving


materials, design and the basic weaving technique for a rope style cedar bark bracelet. Weaving materials will be


provided for each participant to make one bracelet.


Facilitator: Pearl Innas is originally from Hartley Bay and married into the Kitkatla Blackfish House. Pearl remembers


watching her grandmother Flora Eaton weave. Her interested in weaving developed from those early years


and in 2000 Pearl learned from Anna Bell Woods the arts of weaving and harvesting of weaving materials. Pearl


learnt basic techniques of making hats, baskets and bracelets. She is also a Chilkat style weaver and has developed


a pattern board for her Husband's House story. Pearl will be working on this major project in the fall.
